While 2019’s?Call of Duty: Modern Warfare?continues to be enjoyed by its player-base, it’s apparent that it hasn’t been much of a priority for Activision for a while now. Ever since the release of?Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War?in November 2020, it and?Call of Duty: Warzone?have been the main focus since they continue to receive new seasons of content.?Modern Warfare, on the other hand, hasn’t had a new season since Season 6, which wrapped up just before Black Ops Cold War’s first season.

This hasn’t sat well with those still playing?Modern Warfare but developer Infinity Ward eventually threw fans a bone with a trio of new maps. While unexpected, it was certainly a pleasant surprise, but players were only able to experience them for about a week or so before Infinity Ward suddenly removed two of them. After a couple of months of silence, the developer has finally returned them to the game in a new update.

As a reminder, the first of these maps?is the Al-Raab Airbase, based on a location from?Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s campaign. It’s available across the 6v6 modes, is somewhat larger than most other maps, and has been added to the 24/7 playlist. The second is an entirely new one called Drainage and is designed solely for?the 2v2 Gunfight mode. It’s currently available in the Gunfight and Gunfight – Snipers Only playlists. The third map, Killhouse, was the only one of the three to not be taken out and has still been available since March. This map originated in Call of Duty 4 aka the original?Modern Warfare.

While the update appears to have come out of nowhere, the return of these maps was always on the cards. Some time after their removal, Infinity Ward did explain why it did so, simply saying that the maps just weren’t ready to be added to the game yet.

Some may hope that this is a sign that?Modern Warfare?hasn’t been abandoned just yet and could still receive new content, but that seems rather unlikely. If it were, it would probably only be in small bursts, like these new maps. Aside from?Warzone?and?Black Ops Cold War, Activision also has a brand new?Call of Duty?title in the pipeline for later this year. Details are still incredibly scarce, aside from rumors claiming it’s another World War 2 game, but whatever it turns out to be, that will no doubt become Activision’s next priority.
