  Assassin’s Creed Odyssey


  I am officially done with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. I have put 75 hours in, beating the main story at about hour 50, and then spending the next 25 hunting down every question mark on the map, upgrading legendary sets to max level and scraping up a few last side missions I missed in my initial playthrough.

  Sure, Greece is pretty and AC combat is pretty good now and I like Diablo-style loot, but the real reason Odyssey works so well is its hero, Kassandra.

  It’s been interesting to see so many outlets and players talk about Kassanda like she is essentially the game’s only hero, when she’s just one half of two choices you’re offered between her and her brother, Alexios.

  Whoever you do not pick ends up being an important character in the story. Minor spoiler territory: They’re a part of the cult (you learn this early on) and you will have to choose whether to fight them or convert them back to your side.

  What’s the problem with this sibling split? Mainly, it’s the fact that despite almost identical scripts, Kassandra is a great character while Alexios…isn’t. I noticed this during his lines in my Kassandra campaign, but I started up a new save as Alexios just to see what he was like and…ick. It really is just a question of performance and voicework. Kassandra’s Melissanthi Mahut is stellar, while Alexios’ Michael Antonakos is just not on the same level, though I don’t mean to pick on him personally. He’s too loud and over the top, his accent sounds like a parody of itself, even if it isn’t. He just comes off like an overbearing weirdo while Kassandra is tough, kind and affable, and if you choose her, Odyssey essentially feels like the Wonder Woman game that DC never made.

  It seems very clear to me, and I think most people, that Kassandra, granddaughter of Leonidas, should have just been the star of the show.

  I’m not quite clear on why this happened, and to me, it feels like Ubisoft is really, really reluctant to let go and let a woman fully lead a major Assassin’s Creed release. While they’ve been making progress with playable female characters, it does seem rather ludicrous that there was actually a choice at all in Odyssey.

  In Assassin’s Creed Origins, we play as Bayek with just a few segments playing as Aya, his wife who is more responsible for founding the Assassin order than he is.

  In Assassin’s Creed Syndicate, we again have the sibling thing where we can jump back and forth between Jacob and Evie Frye.

  Before that, 1, 2, 3, Black Flag, Rogue, Unity, all guys.

  Technically, Odyssey is progress given that when you pick Kassandra you’re locked in and she’s the hero for the duration of the game. And yet this still feels like a half measure, like a marketing decision to ensure that a certain portion of the playerbase isn’t “alienated” by being forced to play as a woman. In AC, every time there’s a woman character, it’s always a choice or a mix between her and a playable male lead. But every time only one gender is chosen, it’s a guy, in Assassin’s Creed, but in most games too, including who is leading the box art and promotional materials. It’s Femshep all over again, and yet, this isn’t the type of game where you create your own hero, so it’s even more jarring.

  I am sure I’m about to be accused of “virtue signaling” or whatever the stupid buzzphrase is, but it really does seem clear to me that the right call here was to trust Kassandra to lead Odyssey. The game actually suffers for not doing this, because players who choose Alexios are simply in for a worse story experience, in my estimation. I’ve had many players tell me they chose Alexios then abandon their save and restart as Kassandra, just cause they couldn’t handle him.

  Assassin’s Creed will be back in two years, and I do wonder who is going to be leading that game then.
